Boatbuilders – Spring Meeting with Nate Piper

May 2 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Free

Our first meeting of the spring will be hosted by Nate Piper on May 2nd at the Wentworth-Garner House in Portsmouth.

New this spring: Nate has relocated his summer camp activities from Strawbery Banke to the Wentworth-Gardner House (closer to the river, just a couple of blocks SE of the Strawbery Banke grounds).  Members of the Wentworth Gardner House will be available for introductions and background of the property and buildings and we will highlight the excitement of our new partnership.

For the “Skill Building” part of the meeting we will work through the process of creating the drawings to build a half model of our Piscataqua River Wherry. We took the dimensions off of the original and created a table of offsets. Our next step will be to generate water line lifts for building the half model. It will be like lofting at the half model scale. If you are a seasoned boat builder, or just thinking about your first boat, this is a great opportunity to see a professional boatbuilder go thru the process of using a table of offsets to create curves to build from. We’ll be reviewing what the information in the table of offsets is telling us, laying out the points in the plane of the waterlines, and using splines & spline weights to mark the curves. (at the scale of a half-model)
Also, the same day and location we will be having a Boatshop Volunteer orientation from 1300 – 1500. GNHW members from the morning program are welcome and encouraged to join.
