Sanding a Turned Bowl

What is the best technique to sand a turned bowl?—Bob DeAngelis

Claude Dupuis replies: Power sand with either electric or pneumatic right angle drill using a two inch sanding disk adhered to a two inch mandrel (Velcro). Slow the lathe down. High speeds will overheat a bowl potentially causing hairline cracks, clogging sandpaper and reducing the life of the sandpaper. Use air to dust off between grits to wipe away loose grit from the previous grit. It only takes one grain to create a scratch. A bummer when it only shows up after you’ve applied finish.
